Medium-Sized Companies in Bremen Showcasing the Full Range of the Local Economy
Success stories10 companies from the Hanseatic city that are part of the SME sector

Medium-sized companies form the backbone of Bremen’s economy. They create jobs and produce goods that are in demand worldwide. Here is a selection of ten businesses that illustrate the diversity of Bremen’s economic landscape.
What Defines a Medium-Sized Company? That’s not so easy to pin down. Several different definitions can be considered.
- Institute for SME Research (IfM) Bonn: A company belongs to the "Mittelstand" (SME sector) if most of its shares are held by one or two individuals, who also bear the entrepreneurial risk and exert significant influence. Company size does not matter here.
- SME Definition (KMU): Looking specifically at “medium-sized” enterprises, the IfM defines them as companies with 49 to 499 employees and an annual turnover between €1 million and €49 million. The German Economic Institute in Cologne uses the same definition.
- The EU defines “medium-sized” more narrowly as companies with 49 to 249 employees. Germany’s statistical offices also follow this definition. According to Bremen’s State Statistical Office, 1,047 companies in the state fall into this category.
For our list of ten exemplary medium-sized companies in Bremen, we adopt the second definition. This allows us to show a greater variety of companies in the city and also provides a seamless link to our list of large companies in Bremen, which begins at 500 employees.
The following list highlights companies that reflect Bremen’s economic diversity. The city’s strengths lie in clusters such as aerospace, maritime economy and logistics, wind energy, automotive, and food & beverage production. Cross-cutting fields like IT technologies, hydrogen, and 3D printing also play an important role. With more than 1,000 medium-sized enterprises, this selection is just a starting point.
