Bremen’s Economy in Figures: Statistics 2025

Industry and Services in Bremen
The automotive industry remains Bremen’s strongest economic sector, generating around €25 billion in revenue and making up the largest share of the state’s total economic output. With the world’s second-largest Mercedes Benz plant, Germany’s second-largest aerospace hub, and several shipyards, Bremen manufactures vehicles for the road, sea, air, and even outer space.
Next in line is the transport and logistics sector. With more than eight port facilities, Europe’s most efficient cargo distribution center, and over 40,000 employees, the industry underscores Bremen’s status as a logistics powerhouse.
Other key sectors include wind energy, food and beverage production, and tourism — all essential pillars of Bremen’s economy — complemented by fast-growing cross-sector fields such as IT technologies and artificial intelligence.
Trade and Exports in 2025
Through its ports, Bremen handles a wide variety of goods bound for Germany, Central Europe, and the world. Among its top export products are cars and other vehicles (€13.2 billion) — with Bremerhaven’s car terminal boasting what is likely Europe’s largest parking lot — and aircraft components (€1.9 billion), including wings manufactured for several Airbus models.
A standout in the import/export statistics is coffee: Bremen is Germany’s leading coffee import port, with imports worth €2.1 billion in 2025. Every second cup of coffee consumed in Germany arrives through Bremen’s ports. The city also plays a key role in coffee exports (€1.1 billion) — much of the raw coffee imported here is roasted, refined, packaged, and re-exported.
Top Export Destinations
The United States remains Bremen’s most important export market, with goods worth more than €5 billion shipped overseas. It is followed by key European partners such as France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain, while China ranks in between with €1.2 billion. These figures underscore Bremen’s position as Germany’s most export-intensive federal state.
Bremen’s Ports in Numbers 2025
A total of 4,226 seagoing vessels and 6,305 inland vessels called at Bremen’s ports last year, handling 61.9 million tonnes of cargo. Three-quarters of this was container traffic, processed primarily in Bremerhaven, Northern Europe’s fourth-largest container port. In addition, 1.25 million vehicles passed through Bremerhaven’s terminals (Source: Hafenspiegel 2024, Bremenports).
Tourism in Bremen
With 126 hotels and guesthouses, Bremen offers a place to stay for every type of traveler. In 2025, guests spent 2.9 million nights in the city — a record for the Hanseatic city! But Bremen doesn’t only attract overnight guests: with 35 million day visitors, the city is a popular destination for shopping, sightseeing, and business trips. Altogether, tourism generated €1.8 billion in gross revenue for the retail and hospitality sectors and supported 30,000 jobs.
