We are passionate about promoting Bremen as a hub for business and science
Within its “Marketing and Tourism” division, WFB also manages the specialised field of business and investment promotion. The target groups here are businesses and the scientific community, with the aim of influencing companies’ location decisions. Science Marketing
Universities and research institutions create and generate knowledge. Thanks to the close integration of science and industry, this knowledge is transferred to companies in the region. This collaboration contributes to the development of innovative products and services and strengthens the competitiveness of the economy. The science sector generates around €228 million in annual tax revenue for the federal state and provides approximately 31,000 jobs.
WFB supports this sector through a wide range of marketing activities, from online platforms to events.
1. Knowledge Worlds – supra-regional education marketing
As part of the current tourism strategy of the State of Bremen, WFB has been tasked with promoting the nine extracurricular learning venues united under the name Knowledge Worlds (Wissenswelten) beyond the region.
The aim is to attract school classes for one- or multi-day trips to Bremen and Bremerhaven. All measures are developed, coordinated, and implemented in close cooperation with the responsible representatives of the participating institutions. A new website (Please note that this page is available in German only, but can be viewed using a browser translation tool.) as well as a new brochure form part of the core activities.
The Knowledge Worlds include the following institutions:
In Bremen
- botanika
- Bremer Geschichtenhaus
- Denkort Bunker Valentin
- Übersee-Museum
- Universum®
In Bremerhaven
- German Emigration Center
- German Maritime Museum
- Climate House 8° East
- Zoo at the Sea

2. Science up close!
In our project Science up close!, we present outstanding personalities from the scientific communities of Bremen and Bremerhaven – the many brilliant minds working in laboratories and lecture halls who make the State of Bremen exceptional. In this portrait series, researchers and science communicators regularly answer our questions, sharing what they love about their work and why Bremen is the right place for them.
Find out more about the researchers and science communicators featured in Wissenschaft persönlich! (Please note that this page is available in German only, but can be viewed using a browser translation tool.)
3. SCIENCE GOES PUBLIC!
Pubs are usually places to quench your thirst. In Bremen and Bremerhaven, they have also been places to satisfy a thirst for knowledge twice a year since 2017. Every spring and autumn, researchers present their work and latest findings in entertaining short talks in a relaxed pub atmosphere as part of SCIENCE GOES PUBLIC! always at 8:30 pm on six consecutive Thursdays.
The event series SCIENCE GOES PUBLIC! premiered in Bremen in 2017, becoming a state-wide initiative and taking place simultaneously in the twin cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven for the first time.
Through a collaboration between the initiator of the event format and the Bremerhaven network Pier der Wissenschaft, together with the Science Communication Network Bremen/Bremerhaven, researchers are identified who are keen to present themselves to the public in an unconventional setting. The programme offers fascinating insights into often little-known areas of science. Visitors can look forward to a varied programme, not only in terms of topics but also in the engaging ways knowledge is shared – ranging from illustrative experiments and artistic performances to the popular pub quiz.
SCIENCE GOES PUBLIC! cooperates with various partners and scientific institutions in the region and is supported by Erlebnis Bremerhaven GmbH and WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH.
The event series takes place over six weeks each spring (March and April) and autumn (October and November) in pubs and bars in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Admission is free on all event days. All topics, dates, and venues can be found at www.sciencegoespublic.de . (Please note that this page is available in German only, but can be viewed using a browser translation tool.)

Best of Bremen
Did you know? Elvis Presley first set foot on German soil in Bremerhaven. Europe’s largest fashion photography studio is located in Bremen’s Überseestadt district. The first bicycle path in Europe was established in the Viertel and can still be seen there today.
There are countless positive, fascinating, and sometimes surprising stories from Bremen – some of them even quite amusing. Did you know that the very first container was unloaded in Bremen, and the second one fell straight onto a truck? Or that Bremen was once a pioneer of the nudist movement? And do you know why the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT features the Bremen key on its cover? Or how long the chain would be if all the fish fingers produced in Bremerhaven in a single year were laid end to end?
The booklet Best of Bremen brings together a selection of these stories across 72 pages. Now in its fifth edition, it has once again been published in cooperation with WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH and is available free of charge, including at tourist information centres. Best of Bremen is available in both German and English.
These stories are also available online: Best of Bremen
If you are interested in reading, sharing, or distributing Best of Bremen – for example as part of a welcome package for new employees or for guests – please feel free to contact WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH.

A quiet revolution is taking shape in the logistics industry: More and more companies are turning to electric heavy-duty vehicles. But is it worth it in the long run? Two examples from Bremen show how it could work.
Learn moreDust Tests for Mars
At a distance of 225 million kilometers from Earth, Mars is an inhospitable place for humans. So how could people live there at all? What would habitats need to look like? What could be produced on site? These are the kinds of questions that Bremen-based geophysicist and engineer Christiane Heinicke has been working on for many years. Her research also deals with seemingly mundane issues like dust.
