Bremen BIKE IT!
BIKE IT! – cycle tourism and cycling promotion
The Bremen BIKE IT! project promotes cycle tourism in the State of Bremen. Its aim is to communicate and further enhance the quality of cycling in Bremen and Bremerhaven.
Bremen is a cycling city. Around 25 percent of all journeys in the city on the Weser are made by bike. This means that no other German city with more than 500,000 inhabitants has a higher share of people cycling. In a European comparison, Bremen ranks third behind Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Cycling is part of Bremen’s identity. It is normal, part of everyday life, on trend, and a genuine quality-of-life factor. BIKE IT! builds on exactly this: only if cycling is enjoyable in everyday life will it also become the preferred mode of transport in leisure time—for both visitors and residents.
Cycling as a key asset
As a company of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH promotes cycling through proactive communication as part of BIKE IT!. With BIKE IT! Bremen, the city’s cycling qualities are embedded in the State of Bremen’s brand architecture and integrated into its business and investment promotion activities.
Services, events, and communication
Bremen BIKE IT! focuses on cycling culture—combining services, events, media, and partnerships. In addition to the general public in Bremen and Bremerhaven, the target groups include visitors to the city, whether they are staying for a day, several days for business, or visiting on a short trip.
Reach your destination quickly and easily with the Bike Citizens app
The map data for the Bike Citizens cycling navigation app for Bremen, Bremerhaven, and the surrounding area can be downloaded free of charge to your smartphone. The app knows the best routes for cyclists—whether you prefer the fastest or a more relaxed ride. It is available in German, English, French, and Dutch (though not in Low German) and includes points of interest in both cities and the surrounding region. If you wish, you can also use the app to track and analyse your individual rides.
Bremen BIKE IT! – Cycling routes
Attractive and varied cycling routes—available in print and digitally via the Bike Citizens navigation app—make it easy to get on your bike and explore the city. They offer a mix of vibrant urban life and relaxation in green surroundings, inviting you to discover Bremen, Bremerhaven, and the surrounding region. There are currently 13 different Bremen BIKE IT! cycling routes for Bremen and Bremerhaven. These easy-to-follow tour suggestions inspire people to get on their bikes and explore the cities with all their unique features and sights.
Events, trade fairs, and partnerships
Cargo bike race and Altbaukriterium
Bremen BIKE IT! develops its own event formats and establishes them in the State of Bremen—for example, the Bremen cargo bike race or guest editions of the Graz-based indoor cycling race “Altbaukriterium.” Both formats take place annually, often as part of other cultural events.
Film Night Rides
With the “Film Night Ride” event series, BIKE IT! combines cycling, open-air cinema, and urban history. Using a mobile cargo bike cinema, short films are shown at unusual and sometimes previously undiscovered locations around the city. Film Night Rides are often organised in cooperation with other events, as part of campaigns, or at the invitation of cultural institutions in the region.
Major cycling events
BIKE IT! acts as an interface between Bremen and major supra-regional events related to cycling. Whether sports events or conferences, BIKE IT! actively supports organisers in bringing their projects to the city, complements them with Bremen-specific content, and provides support in marketing and PR.
Cooperation with partners from culture, science, and business
BIKE IT! collaborates with events and exhibitions, as well as with cultural institutions and research institutes in the city, and offers themed cycling tours, for example. Venues from events such as jazzahead!, the Long Night of Bremen’s Museums, or the Long Night of Culture in Bremerhaven are integrated into the Bike Citizens navigation app, allowing users to easily navigate from one location to another throughout the night.
