Fraunhofer IFAM is one of the most important independent research institutions in Europe for adhesive bonding technology, surfaces, shaping and functional materials. Solutions developed at the institute are applied across a wide range of industries.
In its Automotive business segment, Fraunhofer IFAM develops technologies, ideas, and solutions for the automotive value chain. Demands for saving both energy and resources have turned lightweighting into one of the industry’s key challenges. Novel lightweight materials and techniques, as well as integrated structures, are gaining importance. The resulting mix of materials requires new joining techniques, for which the institute has developed solutions, employing adhesive bonding know-how or cast hybrid joints. With regard to electric mobility, R&D activities range from new battery concepts, electrical drive systems and controls, to building up and testing demonstrator vehicles. Know-how in surface technologies and functionalizing surfaces rounds out the competency portfolio for automotive applications.
