Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM

The Fraunhofer IFAM is one of the most important research institutions in Europe for adhesive bonding technology, surfaces, shaping and functional materials.
In addition to extreme environmental conditions and stresses due to UV radiation, saline atmosphere and mechanical stresses, biological loads by macro- and microfouling play a crucial role for the use of materials and components in a marine environment. Fouling is a main factor for material degradation in shipping and causes as a result of increased flow resistance up to 30% higher fuel costs. The Fraunhofer IFAM is developing and testing corrosion and anti-fouling systems and coatings in laboratory and field tests and provides the maritime industry with research and development from functionalization and quality assurance of surfaces up to production optimization for adhesive bonding technology.
