Bremerhaven has a long tradition as a port for American traffic. From here weekly departures are scheduled to North America. Destinations include the United States east coast and the Gulf of Mexico, Canada, Mexico and the United States west coast.
Germany’s leading car manufacturers such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, Ford, VW, Audi and Porsche ship their finished vehicles via the car terminal in Bremerhaven. In 2010, 1.6 million vehicles were shipped through the port of Bremerhaven, making it Europe’s number one port for the shipment of automobiles. Exports are mainly destined for the USA, East Asia and the Middle East; while imports mainly come from Asia and the United States.
With an annual handling of around 500,000 metric tons of fruits, vegetables and other perishables Bremerhaven is also known as Europe’s cold storage center.
